VENTIN BEAUCOURT & MATTHEW FRANKLIN JENKINS - THE AVANTGARDE DIARIES

KO.FASHION produced a new video for THE AVANT GARDE DIARIES Valentin Beaucourt works as a pastry chef in Paris, but he really lives for his music. Together with his friends Quentin Nicolle-Charlot, Victor Fièvre and Pierre-Oliver Chenu he forms French pop wave band D’Austerlitz. The quartet has made quite an impression on the indie scene with their debut EP Gold, featuring lyrics with dark undertones, paired with cheery melodies.

In the beautiful setting of the band’s hometown guitarist Valentin Beaucourt shared his very personal view on avant-garde with us, introducing Detroit-based photographer Matthew Franklin Jenkins, whose work he was immediately stuck by. “I define Matthew's work as avant-garde because of the fact that it's rarely seen elsewhere,” Beaucourt told us. By browsing the Internet, he came across Jenkin’s work; strong photographs that often feature single objects in wide-open spaces, evoking a particular sense of loneliness. “He manages to do what I actually feel. But I could never do it.” Right after Beaucourt discovered Jenkins, he contacted him out of curiosity. We hope to see a collaboration of these two young artists some day.

Julien Hallard and Artus de Lavilléon - Remaining Independen

Vintage aesthetics, rock’n´roll and a portion of humor are the trademarks of Julien Hallard’s short films. The Jim Morrison look-alike follows a Vincent Gallo fan who finally meets his idol, makes a drama comedy about a young man, who is losing his hair and shows a crazy day in a record store. Julien started directing in NYC, with no previous experience he just decided to shoot his friends and got drawn into the pure form of independent filmmaking. When looking for the perfect DVD cover for his short film “Vinyl”, he asked his friend, the Parisian artist Artus de Lavilléon, to draw the scenery. Artus’ art is fun and when you meet him you realize it is more about him and his warm personality, than a certain style. Working for commercial brands to remain independent from the rules of the contemporary art scene, Artus has managed to create himself his own niche and has often been given carte blanche for his artistic work. He plays with words, creates big drawings from movie scenes, turns his small Parisian room into an oeuvre d’art and remains humble and down to earth. With his manifest of ‘art posthume’, he is constantly opening new doors for seeing art, without expecting to be famous just yet. Find out more about the contemporary art of Artus. André Saraiva and Olivier Zahm - Unconventional Friends

KO.FASHION produced a video for THE AVANT GARDE DIARIES

From graffiti to fame: André Saraiva or his alter ego Mr. A doesn’t really need an introduction. The man who started tagging Paris at a very young age managed the transition to become an established artist, club owner and now art director of L’Officiel homme. This success is probably due to André’s warm personality and an open and positive attitude to live. “There is nothing to be afraid of and everything can be explored.“
If you are looking for a trendy hang out in Paris, you will probably end up in one of André’s clubs or restaurants – from the cozy ‘Hotel Amour’, to ‘La Fidelité’, and ‘Le Baron’ or ‘Montana’. These places have transformed the Paris nightlife. Currently André is opening a ‘Baron’ in NYC and London.
We met André in his apartment (with a 360° view over Paris) during a photo shoot with his best friend Olivier Zahm. The photographer and face behind Purple magazine is for André a constant source of inspiration and the incarnation of avant-garde. Olivier started as an art curator and André admired Olivier’s eclectic taste and vision. When you open the bi annual publication Purple or brows through Purple Diary you will understand – Olivier is different, instinctive and almost inhibited. The ‘Purple’ magazine became a platform for photographers like Juergen Teller, Terry Richardson, Wolfgang Tillmans, and Mario Sorrenti. He showed their anti Photoshop sleek high-end fashion aesthetics and developed a new movement and counterculture in fashion.
With his sunglasses and cigar he may at first appear arrogant and difficult to approach – but Olivier is a free spirit with a vision bigger than his ego. He publishes a fashion magazine, yet his projects and mission is more cultural. He works constantly and most preferably with his friends – like André or Carine Roitfeld (Olivier published her book IRREVELANT) and is always ready to capture a special and real moment with his camera. (Olivier Zahm photographed our black and white portrait of André.)

Les Chardonnet Darmaillacq and Vanessa le Mat - Space in Movement

When Damien Chardonnet Darmaillacq met Vanessa le Mat a whole new world opened up for the young theater director. Through his friendship with the choreographer Vanessa, Damien discovered dance for himself. Vanessa’s choreographic approach is deep and comes from a meta point of view, where she reflects on her performance, space and movement even while dancing. Damien and Vanessa worked together on “Cabinet des figures”: A choreographic object that questions the different transformation modalities of the body and its possible perceptions within the context of stage work.

When Damien learned about Vanessa’s work with space and movement, he saw similarities to the research field of his mother Sabine Chardonnet Darmaillacq and he introduced the two women. As an architect and professor at Ecole Nationale Supérieure d’ Architecture in Paris, Madame Chardonnet Darmaillacq is working on space and movement, questioning how the environment, space and spheres influence us as human beings – things Vanessa le Mat explores through her choreographic research.
How do we move in a certain space? In order to answer this question Vanessa le Mat left the stage and explored dance in places like the Palais de Tokyo – where she performed a choreographic installation among the surprised museum visitors. Sabine Chardonnet Darmaillacq and Vanessa add now the dimension of sound to their work on space and movement for a future collaboration: L’installation sonore.
Vanessa Le Mat has been working as a dancer with several dance companies before she joined the Frankfurt Ballet in 2001. She joined the Forsythe Company, a creative collaboration until 2006. Since 2007, she lives and works in Paris where she founded Walking Productions. In 2010 and 2011, she presented Corps Collector, a choreographic installation with eight performers at FRAC and at the Museum für Angewandte Kunst in Frankfurt, in which she perceived herself as a collector of body movements that she put together in an unusual way. In December 2010, she proposes Cabinet des Figures, at Centre national de la dance in Paris.

See more of Vanessa Le Mat's projects on her website and find out more about the amazing setting of Palais de Tokyo where the shooting took place.

LANVIN FALL WINTER 2010/2011 PARIS FASHION WEEK

lanvin

KO.FASHION produced a fashion movie for SWAROVSKI - Paris Fashion Week: Lanvin Fall-Winter 2010-11 Sparkles SWAROVSKI ELEMENTS

Lanvins artistic director Alber Elbaz is a master of draping and adornment, and the tribal-themed jewelry and ornamentation of his Fall-Winter collection made impressive use of thousands of SWAROVSKI ELEMENTS. Glints of light reflected off of crystal-embellished necklines, cuffs and all down Lanvins signature exposed zippers, adding mystery to the beautifully moody clothes.
