Suzy Menkes Interview Berlin Fashion week before the Reminez & Black Coffee show.

By Katharina Kowalewski from KOFASHION www.kofashion.com

Katharina Kowalewski: Hello and welcome to Berlin. How do you enjoy Berlin fashion week so far? Suzy Menkes: I think it’s terrific to be in Berlin. You know it’s not only about the shows I’m seeing on the runway but it’s just the feel of the city cause it’s so vibrant. And I’m trying to steal some time away just to go around and look at the streets, see what people are doing and wearing.

Katharina: And what’s the biggest difference between New York, Paris and Berlin for you? Suzy Menkes: You know to me it’s so important that Berlin is so young. It’s got a lot of young people and that’s where the dynamic and the dynamism comes from and that marks it out as different from the other cities that do big fashion weeks.

Katharina: You’re the biggest style expert I know on earth, so: Where is fashion going? What are the biggest trends that are coming up now? Suzy Menkes: I think it’s a big moment of change. You know we’ve had all this fast fashion, now we’re having a little bit more thoughtful fashion. People are thinking about spending money. People are thinking about what they really want to do about green. And that’s something where you know I really admire Germany and Berlin. The way that the green issues that has been around in the rest of the western world about food and now they are in Germany about clothing – where it comes from? How is it made? Whether it is made from good materials that don’t harm the planet? That’s something Germany should be very proud of.

Katharina: What do you think? Where is your passion coming from? Because it’s so many years you’re in fashion now and you just told us at the press conference that you’re still curious and you want to learn things in Berlin. I thought: We want to learn from you! How can you say that you’re still curious and that you still have this passion for fashion? Suzy Menkes: You know. I think if you don’t love fashion, you can get out of it. But everybody I know and a lot of these designers. And look at theses designers they’re mostly so many of the big names: the Giorgio Armanis, the Ralph Laurens and Karl Lagerfeld – They are all 15, 20 years older than me even. So, that just proves you can go on forever.

Katharina: And you still have this fire for fashion and it’s your love? Suzy Menkes: I love fashion, because you know it’s so much an expression of life and I think that Berlin is coming back to live and obviously fashion comes back to life in Berlin. It’s just part of the history in the world.

Katharina: And who are your favourite designers and your favourite trends at the moment? Suzy Menkes: You know I have a long list of designers like everybody else and I mix them up. But the one designer for whom I will fight from the bottom of my heart forever is Issey Miyake cause when he created those pleats please he made them for dance, you know for dance performances. He certainly made them for my carry on bags; they lie, you can wash them in a hotel, they fabulously easy and sometimes you know fashion or not fashion we want cloths that work as hard as we do. Katharina: Great. Thank you so much. Enjoy Berlin fashion week and have a great show..

Suzy Menkes: Great to talk to you! Katharina: Yes it was great to talk to you and to meet you and take a little bit your passion home.
